“Which one is better?!”

How do I start an article with the given title?? This Godzilla world of ours is a hobby, which is defined as “an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure”. What does that mean? It means we are supposed to have fun with it. The hobby IS fun, but like anything else in the world, someone will always find something to piss and moan about. What am I talking about?

Lets start off with the recent news of the NECA GMK Godzilla announcement that came on the heels of the SHMA GMK Godzilla announcement. During the NY Toy Fair show, NECA was not able to unveil there next Godzilla figure as it was still awaiting approval by Toho. Fine, justifiable. NECA did however unveil the prototype via Twitter on February 13, 2016. The images posted below are not the final product:

Both figures look great. The sculpt on both is faithful to the look of the suit used in the film. Ok, ok, what am I getting at? Since the NECA reveal of their GMK Godzilla figure appeared, in the span of only a short 48 hours, there has been a pissing war going on various Facebook groups and forums about which is better; NECA GMK or SHMA GMK.

Guys, seriously, this has to be one of the stupidest debates that has been going on for a long time now. Which one is better? It started when Bandai Creation began releasing Godzilla figures back in the early 2000’s. The argument over which line or figure is better is so petty and annoying. Arguments like that water down our hobby. As mentioned above within the definition of hobby, pleasure is the key word that sticks out to me. Arguing over which figure is better is pretty stupid. We all have opinions. We are all entitled to like which figures we like and which ones we choose to buy. Why should one figure be beaten down over another? It shouldn’t.

Lets look at some quick facts about both figures. Both figure will be about 6 inches tall. Both figures will have articulation. The NECA price point will be about $20 while the SHMA price point is about $80 give or take a few bucks. The SHMA will have more points of articulation and will be sculpted by master sculptor Yuji Sakai. Having a figure sculpted by Yuij Sakai already commands a higher price point. It is Yuji Sakai people. If NECA was able to get Yuji Sakai to sculpt for them, they would be charging more money on their figures. So, $20 NECA Vs $80 SHMA figure with more points of articulation and sculpted by Yuji Sakai. Do the math. You choose which figure is better for you. I will say the NECA is much more affordable and will easily accessible here in the USA. That is not to say the SHMA GMK Godzilla will be hard to get. Many US retailers will be selling the S.H. Monster Arts GMK Godzilla once Blue Fin distributes here in the US after the figures initial Japanese release in June.

I will go on to admit that the NECA Godzilla 1954 is a damn nice figure. I do not own it but I have seen enough pictures from other collectors and I think it looks great. I have debated about getting it myself. I will go on to add that NECA is doing a great job with their figures. The are sized nicely, sculpted well and priced great making them a great addition at an affordable price for anyone.

Sure, SHMA figures falling apart right out of the box is not fresh at all. That should be happening. That is a point taken off from me in the Q/A department of the figure. Those of us SHMA collectors know about all the problems that have come with certain releases (King Ghidorah 1st release) that have left a sour taste in our mouths. Heads, tails and arms popping off. Ugly gaps on the body and in the dorsal plates of the Godzilla 1964. I can deal with that to a certain degree. Definitely one of the con’s of SHMA figures.

So what is the argument? Price difference? Level of detail? Points of articulation? How about…who gives a shit?! I am so sick of hearing arguments like this. There is something out there for everyone. Two months ago we did  not have any new NECA or SHMA figures. Look at the landscape now as we have new figures from both lines. Guys…WE HAVE NEW TOYS TO BUY! Hold on, what are some people are doing though? They are pissing and moaning on which one is better. To the people that are starting or getting involved in these pissing matches I say this to you: SHUT UP.

The same could be said to people that bitch about X-Plus figures to model kit’s. I am sorry I am not a skilled model kit builder. I wish I was because there are a lot of amazing kits out there that look friggin amazing. When it comes to kits, that is not my area of expertise. I have seen in the past three years debates on why kit’s are better than X-Plus. How about…WHO CARES. I do not build kits and I sure as hell can’t paint like some of the pros out there. X-Plus is what gets my juices flowing. Collect what you like, what you want and what you can afford.

What does this all boil down to? OPINIONS. Opinions are like assholes, we all have one. Who is to say my opinion is right and yours is wrong? No one, that is why it is called an opinion. I don’t care what you collect. However, I do care that you collect what you like. Quite often, I am asked the grandest collecting question of them all:

“Which one is better and which one should I get?”

I always follow up those questions with the merits of each figure, the pros and cons and I leave the decision up to the collector. Who the hell am I to tell any of you what to get or which one is better? I am no one. Collectors ask me this because they want to know my opinion because (I believe) they believe I will give them an honest and somewhat educated response to help them make the decision.

To close out this rant, there is something coming for everyone. We have a plethora of GMK Freshness coming. At the time of this writing, X-Plus just released there Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai GMK Godzilla, the S.H. Monster Arts GMK Godzilla is coming out in a short four months or so and NECA has a GMK coming later this year. Tell me how we all can’t be happy? We should all be happy little collectors. We should not be bitching and trying to stir up silliness within our hobby on which figure is better. Be it X-Plus, S.H. Monster Arts, NECA, Bandai, Bandai Creation, Marmit, M1, etc, etc., there is something out there for everyone. So enough with the bullshit debates. Its all just an opinion.

Enjoy the hobby people, enjoy it. Rant over.

FRESH~
